This small community in Southwest Alaska is located at the mouth of the Kuskokwim River, 40 miles inland from the Bering Sea and 400 air miles west of Anchorage. Bethel is the transportation center for dozens of Native villages in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. A federally recognized tribe is located in the community - the Orutsararmuit Native Council. The majority of the population is Alaska Native or part Native. The traditional Yup'ik Eskimo practices and language remain predominant in the area. |
