KuC has undergone some exciting changes in buildings, people and programs.  For those of you on campus, you can see that KuC is undergoing renovation of restrooms and soon our entryways will be upgraded.  The grant that supports work on our buildings will continue through next year with new carpeting and paint.  We are most pleased to have new faculty.  Some of you know Ben Kuntz as our former ESP coordinator-- he is now KuC's assistant professor of English.  We have new degree options in the approval process:  a B.A. in Yup'ik language and studies will be addressed by the Board of Regents this year and a proposed certificate in Ethnobotany is being prepared for review by the UAF Faculty Curriculum committee this year.

Welcome Students

KuC is establishing a Writing Center and is in the process of hiring a coordinator to staff it.  The Writing Center will be part of the Learning Assistance Center (LAC) and will support faculty and students in development of students' writing skills.  Writing is a life-long necessity for communication and becoming a skilled writer takes focus and practice.  KuC is determined to do everything possible to help students become comfortable with the writing process.  This means your instructors will require you to use the resources of the Writing Center to complete assignments, so be prepared!

For those of you in Sackett Hall dormitory, you will note that the student handbook makes reference to ATTENDANCE as an important part of college success.  I want to emphasize attendance as the theme of KuC's academic life this year for students and faculty.  We addressed the topic during the faculty retreat last month.  Faculty's part in focusing on attendance is to avoid canceling classes, arranging for substitute instructors if their absence is planned or unavoidable, and making up missed classes.  Everyone's time is precious and we want to make sure you get the most of your time here at KuC.  Part of attendance is punctuality--being on time.  Attendance also means paying attention in class.  It may seem "old school" and not befitting to in a college setting with adult students to be mindful of attendance and punctuality.  However, I want to remind everyone that your punctual attendance and attention is a large part of how faculty grade your performance in their classes, and it is a major factor in workplace and job success.  In order for everyone to get the best possible education, you need to be there and be mindful of what is being presented to you.  All education, particularly college, is designed to be a life-changing, transformational experience and being there to support focused learning is what punctual attendance means.

I encourage students to be involved in student campus life and governance.  A very direct way of active involvement is to run for student government.  I encourage students to run for office, VOTE, and once elected, carry out office duties.

Lastly, as director, I would like to have more direct contact with students.  In the past, I have tried to have lunch at the dorm on a regular basis--usually Wednesdays when our fabulous cooks prepare Native foods--so that I can interact with students.  With students' busy schedules and brief lunch breaks, there was not often the time to engage in dialog with students.  Once student government is established I want to set up a time or event (for example, dinner or particular kind of activity once a month?) of your choosing to have an opportunity for dialog with student, without staff or faculty around, and without my determining the agenda.  I want to hear directly from students.  I know an on-campus event effectively leaves out distance students, and I would like to address that.  My email address is:  lfmcp@uaf.edu.  Perhaps we can set up a dial in time for me to dialog with distance students.

KuC is our campus in a part of the world with many tremendous opportunities and resources--beautiful sub-arctic tundra in the middle of the nation's largest wildlife refuge with interesting people supported by plentiful and healthy fish and game and hosting one of the few vital and viable indigenous languages.  We need to do whatever we can to fulfill our mission and keep our part of the world sustainable and a healthy place to live.

Quyana elitnaurluci KuC-mi!  (Thank you for coming to school at KuC!)
