Academic Programs

Rural Human Service (RHS) is a two year college certificate educational program designed for Alaskan village based human service workers. Each class is taught holistically incorporating spiritual, emotional and intellectual learning in the classroom.  Courses are taught in an experiential adult education model.  This means that classes are interactive, hands on and a creative blend of Western and Native modalities.  Elders provide support, instruction and guidance in all RHS classes as well as UAF instructors.  The personal development, empowerment, culture and self determination of each student is highly respected and encouraged.  A few but not all of the areas covered in the RHS program include: crisis intervention, community change, rural counseling skills, interpersonal violence, addictions, and cross cultural skills.

The RHS program is coordinated by the Lead Instructor, Diane McEachern, LCSW.   You can contact her for more information at (907) 543-4597.  Email: lfdmm@uaf.edu
