Your Success is Our Success

“If you are planning to attend college, plan ahead.  Ask your teachers to help you find scholarships. There are many scholarships you can apply to.  You have to look for it or find it, because it won’t come to you.  If and when you attend college, do it right the first time.  Follow your Elders’ pride in you and make them proud of your accomplishments.”

Tracy earned an Associate of Arts degree in May 2006.  Her goal after receiving her AA Degree is to take distance education classes through UAF and pursue her bachelor’s degree.  Because you need practice and study skills for college, Tracy’s advice to young high school students, who are thinking about going to any college, is to “Always do your best in your work, study hard, turn in assignments on time, and best of all . . . finish high school!”

Majoring in Elementary Education, Kristine is still attending Kuskokwim Campus in Bethel.  Her role model teacher and principal inspired her to continue her education.  Her support and encouragement has proved that she could be whatever she wants to be.  All she needs to do is to reach out and earn it! ”Reach for the Stars!! Never ever give up on your dreams because you can do it!!  You have to want it to get it. Apply for as many scholarships you can.  Stay focused in school because in college, you need good study, time management and budgeting skills.  Attend all your classes and do your best in all that you do.”

Monica Thompson is a lifelong resident of the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta. She was born and raised in Bethel and is currently attending the Kuskokwim campus. While employed full-time at the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation as a water lab supervisor, Monica attends KuC part-time. Monica will be finishing her Associates of Arts in spring 2008 and is excited to start in a baccalaureate degree, possibly Nursing or Justice. Students, staff and faculty named Monica as KuC’s Outstanding Student for numerous reasons. Monica is a role model for many students. She is described by her peers and instructors as being highly conscientious, interested in learning, dependable, hardworking, and always positive.

Monica was named KuC’s “Student of the Year” for 2006-07.
