Audio Conference Information – Helpful Hints:

Inquire at village schools for possible classroom space.  Students may need to purchase their own speakerphone with a mute button as the university does not have resources to buy personal audio conference equipment.  Students at the same site are asked to call together so save long distance toll charges.

When dialing the toll free number, you will hear a voice prompt asking you to enter your meeting number.   If you type too slow or too fast the code may not be accepted and you will have to try again.  Once you reach the bridge you may hear a beep or music.   Please wait until your instructor joins the class.   If you experience a problem reaching your conference enter *0 to reach an operator during the call or call the Event Builder for help at: 1-800-290-5900.

In some circumstances, your instructor may choose to record a class session.  To play back, dial 1-800-230-8546 enter the class date such as 091009 and the meeting code number.  Please talk to your instructor to see if these feature is possible.

To some extent, students are responsible for the quality of their phone’s connection.

DO NOT USE CELL PHONES OR PORTABLE BATTERY PHONES; THEY CAUSE TERRIBLE INTER-FERENCE IN CONFERENCE SITUATIONS.

Bad weather, northern lights, and sunspots will cause static and echo on the lines.  Hang up and dial back in to your class; a new phone connection often clears up the problem.  Loud buzzing is caused from the mike and convener being placed too close together. Check your phone’s volume if people cannot hear you.   Some speakerphones have batteries that need to be changed each semester.   Use *6 to mute your line, #6 will unmute your line.

MISSING CLASSES:

It is common courtesy to call the instructor if you miss a class.  If you plan to travel out of state, the toll free number for your course will work in most regions of North America.  If you have questions about calling internationally please call Heidi Simmons 1-800-478-5822 ext 521 – students will need to pay for calls that are not covered by the toll free zone.  If you stop attending, you should officially withdraw or you will receive a failing or no basis grade for the course.  Call the KuC Student Services for assistance 1-800-478-5822 ext 505 or 562.

Audio conference Back up for the courses listed with E-Live (Elluminate Live):

Audio conference numbers may be used when the internet connection is down or for certain sessions as requested by your instructor.  Students should refer to the class syllabi or contact the instructor to determine when the audio conference or internet E-Live connection is used.

Students must down load the E-Live software from the Blackboard site before their course.  Blackboard is a website that contains the electronic syllabi, materials and course information system, found at:  http://classes.uaf.edu

The E-Live class session software allows for two-way audio and the sharing of program applications and graphics.  Students are required to have basic computer skills and access to a computer and internet.  In order to down load the E-live software your computer may require Administrative Access.  Please allow at least 30 minutes for the initial download of the software. Most computers and village dial up access is acceptable, (village sites may experience dropped connections.) A windows/MAC or Unix Computer with 64 MB RAM and soundcard with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) installed; computer headsets – headphone with microphone is needed.  Headsets can be purchased through the KuC bookstore. E-live support can be received through the University Office of Information and Technology 1-800-478-8226, helpdesk@alaska.edu. E-Live support:  http://www.elluminate.com/support/index.jsp

Students may use their own computer for E-Live courses.  Students that wish to use the KuC computer lab should fill out a Computer Access Request form at the time of registration.  To receive a form contact:

KuC Technology Help Desk:  Robert Carpenter, KuC Title III IT/Help Desk Specialist

1-800-478-5822 ext 508 and 543-4508 and KuC Distance Ed Office 1-800-478-5822 ext 521 and 543-4521.
